Township Blizzard Closures
Environment Canada has issued an official Blizzard Warning from at 11:14 AM EST on Thursday 22 December 2022 for the Southern Niagara Region. According to the warning a “crippling” blizzard is expected Friday and Saturday and “travel will become dangerous and is not advised.”
Hazards include blizzard conditions, wind gusts of up 120 km/h, snowfall of 15 to 30 cm by Sunday morning, wind chill values near minus 20 and flash freeze effects producing icy and slippery surfaces. In addition, the NPCA has also issued a Flood Warning for the Lake Erie Shoreline – where very strong southwest winds will cause water levels and wave heights to increase along the shoreline.
TOWN HALL CLOSURE: Wainfleet Town Hall will be physically closed to in person appointments on Friday, but staff will be available remotely and by phone from 8:30 until noon. Payments may be made in the mail slot once the blizzard warning is lifted, or alternatively, in person on January 3rd when the Township Offices reopen, without penalty.
ARENA CLOSURE: The Wainfleet arena will be closed on Friday and Saturday, to ensure public safety during the anticipated duration of the storm event.
LIBRARY CLOSURE: The Wainfleet Public Library will be closed on Friday due to the storm event, and will reopen on January 3, 2023, following the Christmas Holiday break.
We will update the Township website with any additional information as required.
