Septic Systems

Private Septic System Regulations

The Building Code Act, 1992 and the Ontario Building Code (Ontario Regulation 332/12, as amended) regulate the design, construction and renovation of sewage treatment systems which are located wholly on the property which they serve and have design sewage capacity of 10,000 litres/day or less. Any sewage system not located wholly on the property it serves, or is greater than 10,000 litres/day is governed by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.

The Township of Wainfleet took over administration and enforcement of on-site sewage systems from Niagara Region in 2012. The two most common types of sewage treatment units include a Class 4 sewage system, traditional septic tank and leaching bed, and a Class 5 Holding Tank.

*Please note if your septic system contains a Treatment Unit, it must be serviced and maintained under a valid servicing agreement in accordance with 8.9.2.3 & 8.9.2.4 of the Ontario Building Code.

Septic System Applications

Septic Systems can only be installed by a contractor with an up-to-date BCIN who are licensed and registered with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

It is very important to obtain all other approvals from different authorities such as Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority to prevent delays in receiving your permit.
